A radical new concept is taking root among the elite of Silicon Valley. It is reminiscent of the famous Dire Straits song of 1985: Money for Nothing.
The idea is that automation and artificial intelligence are rapidly replacing human labor as a necessary resource for the economy. Therefore, in the not-too-distant future, people will not have jobs. To prepare for this eventuality, high-tech leaders are proposing the concept of Universal Basic Income – meaning that people would be entitled to receive a salary without doing any work. Mark Zuckerberg put forth this suggestion during his recent Harvard University commencement address. Certainly, some food for thought, for most any business.
